I chat with my daughter for as long as our time allows. She putters around, I putter around and then we go back to the screen and carry on another topic of conversation. No need to hang up, it’s FREE! The airwaves are ticking, sometimes the connection is lost but re-dialing is so easy, one click and we’re face to face again coming from opposite time zones.
Sometimes we’re both silent. We see one another doing things. She’s checking her email and I’m surfing the net. I see her surroundings on screen and she sees home sweet home. I sit in her room and move my laptop around to give her a panoramic view. She looks intently and misses the comforts of her bedroom. I hear the spin of the washing machine, I am glad that she’s doing laundry and not piling up her dirty clothes. It’s late afternoon her day and I am a day ahead starting with a hot cup of coffee.
Meanwhile, I am online chatting with a friend who lives in South Africa. My sister in New York sees me available and begins chatting too. I can send messages to as many people as I want while speaking to my daughter and she actually does the same from her end of the world! Three-way conversation is fun too! Video is not possible but when you hear familiar voices in harmony, what a joy it is to be on the computer!
I cannot imagine how a mother is able to stand when a child is in jail. I cannot imagine how a mother is able to cope when her child is violated or deathly ill. I cannot imagine death of a child and the scars it leaves on a mother.
It’s a tiny green icon with a check mark that means available. With a daughter away from home, it’s what a mother looks forward to everyday.
