Ejay is my deaf buddy.
What a great guy he is! He patiently sits with me, two hours whenever time permits to help me practice my signing skills.
We converse about anything that comes to mind. I try to sign as much as I know and fingerspell what I don’t know.
Ejay teaches me signs for words I haven’t learned yet. I often wonder how much of my signing he truly understands.
But the great guy that he is never fails to encourage me by letting me know he understands me!
Sometimes we give each other funny looks. He signs fast and swift forgetting I’m a novice. I give him a perplexed look and then he repeats himself at a slower pace.
When he gives me a funny look, I have to pause and think what I signed incorrectly. Silly me! I sign the word “home” when I actually mean to sign the word “deaf”.
In his mind I don’t make sense and he looks at me with this “huh????” look.
Two hours flies by quickly. I get so engrossed in signing I forget about the noise around me. I ignore the chaos of people passing by.
We exchange signs over Starbucks coffee and his favorite cinnamon roll. We sat and signed over lunch in the mall.
I’m looking forward to celebrating beer with him over another signing meet. Now it’s my turn to share my favorite beer with a great deaf buddy!
