I am glad to be back home. It was a good holiday with dad.
Initially, he didn’t think the trip was long enough but in the end ten days was just right.
We accomplished everything he wanted to do leaving a few extra days for walking and just breathing in the cool and crisp air of San Francisco.
He said it again. “This might be my last year to visit.”
I kept my eye on him and from a distance it was clear that old age has worn him down.
He tires quickly and though he yearns to walk and be outdoors, it’s a struggle for him.
I am on edge whenever he climbs in and out of the car. When he takes too long inside the bathroom I start fretting.
I try not to make him sense I am watching him but it’s necessary to stay close and be alert just in case…
He loves going to the supermarket! We did the rounds from Whole Foods to Trader Joe’s. Bristol Farms to Safeway and the weekend open markets.
One early morning we were at Whole Foods. I sent him upstairs ahead as I needed just a few minutes to check my email in the coffee shop.
No more than five minutes, I head up and was startled to see that he was sitting on a chair, staff fussing around him.
He fell. I held my breath and gritted my teeth in silence.
For a moment my vision turned black thinking about the worst that could happen delaying our trip back home in the coming 5 days.
I was nervous and could not determine whether the fall caused a broken bone.
There was no sign of blood anywhere and when I calmly asked him if he was ok, he seemed confused but stable.
The fall shook him up. I assured him he would be fine when we leave in a few days but inside of me, I was not so sure.
Thank God it rained the next day, justifying that he should stay home and rest.
He felt bad that the fall would dampen his last few days out in the sun. “Give it a day of rest dad.”
It was just ten days and the whole time I kept on thinking that the trip may or may not be his last, anything unexpected can always happen so we have to be prepared.
God was good to us.
We had 9 days of sunshine and only a day of rain.
His fall could have been fatal but with luck, he ended up with no more than a sore bum.
He was ready to head back home after his fall.
We made it safe and sound!
