The best and most original crime writer of the year, however, was Richard Zimler who gave us The Warsaw Anagrams. Richard Zimler is best known for his brilliant novel, The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon, a historical mystery novel set in early 16th century Portugal at a time when that country's few remaining Jews were being hunted down and murdered.

In The Warsaw Anagrams, the author writes in the time of the Holocaust. Amazingly, the reader is once again treated to a unique murder mystery that is not only incredibly evocative of the times, but full of wonderful tales of humanity. This is a crime novel the likes of which you will never read again.
