This is my first blog ANYWHERE so I'm not sure what to do..I am responding to the flash across my screen to "blog on leadership" yesterday 05/19/11...
I am a retired Naval Officer and during my 21 yrs on active duty I must say that I had the pleasure of seeing some leaders at all levels fro the lowest seaman to the Vice Admiral level. thru out there were I feel that ther were 3 common threads that ran thru the fabric of each of the leaders that I observed. Thie three threads are:
Iniative---Leaders, no matter what level I observed, were habitually the ones who took the first step forward to "make something happen"... They showed Iniative by their actions not just their words. The showed Iniative in the way they operated. They did not wait to be told what to do or to wait to see which way the wind was blowing...They stepped froward boldly in a new direction.
Integrity---Leaders, no matter what level I observed, were individuals whose word could be trusted. it was not editied and styled to fit the audience but rather the truth was the truth. Thes leaders I observed told the truth in unvarnished terms no matter the consequences. The were worshipers of truth. They held it in high regard and honored it whenn ever they could do so.
Dependability---Leaders, no matter what level I observed, were individuals who took commitments seriously and seldom were late, incomplete or incorrect in fulfilling their requirements. Like their integrity, the leaders that I observed and admired worshiped gettig the job done in a way that reflected positively on themselves and their crewmates.
Leadership is a HUGE subject and I hope my observations have been helpful.
