I’m a voter. When I see a ballot, I want to cast it. When I make a mark, I like to make it dark. I’m not the one to ever leave a chad pregnant and this time, my vote better count. I’m itching to go to the polls on November 4th like a kid waiting for Santa. I’m registered and ready. I cried when President Bush snagged both elections and I am determined to move my family to Nova Scotia if the republicans get back in office.
I’m an Obama girl and I’m fired up!
However, ring the alarm because the McCain-Palin supporters are registered, ready and fired up too. We are just weeks away from hiring our new president and both parties are officially crunk! It’s an all out war against the “haves” and the “have-nots”.
The Democratic and Republican National Conventions have closed and wow, have these past few weeks been emotional. Controversy grew about the Vice Presidential picks. The media fed their hunger by exposing the personal life of Sarah Palin, John McCain’s controversial Vice Presidential pick and Joe Biden pulled in a bit of airtime by showing America that with a net worth of a negative $300,000, he’s a common citizen who understands the struggle.
Cindy McCain sported a $313,000 outfit at the convention, John McCain forgot how many houses he actually owns and he declared that middle class America makes $5 million “or less”. In today’s economy most of our houses are valued less than Cindy McCain’s outfit, we know how many houses we own, because we are struggling to pay the mortgage on it but he’s right about one thing, most of us do make $5 million or less. Heck, if McCain wants to look at it that way, I’ll go one step further and make it sound even better by saying, I make $10 million…“or less”.
The American people have been forced out of their homes due to huge amounts of foreclosures, the national unemployment rate is at an all time high, don’t get me started on this gas price thing and we actually watched a city of people drown during Hurricane Katrina. I don’t know about you, but I’m fired up!
What’s getting me going even more is Sarah Palin.
Some have accused Palin of being a neglectful mom. Her 17-year old daughter is 5-months pregnant. Palin’s husband was arrested on DUI charges and there are rumors that Palin is not the least bit interested in addressing the concerns of black America.
I’m like many of you. As a voter, a wife, a mom and a black woman those are serious concerns. I had to be brutally honest with myself and address the issues in which the media brought to light.
I couldn’t care any less if Palin’s 17-year old daughter is pregnant.
However I do care about the thousands of teenage mothers across this country that are struggling to provide for their children. Those same teenage parents most likely were never effectively taught sex education and Sarah Palin is against sex education being taught in school. With the current crisis that she’s going through with her daughter, I wonder if she’s against sex education being discussed at home too? I care about the education of the at risk teens who may follow down that same path. Whether Palin likes it or not, sex education is “taught” in school. We may as well do it the right way.
I couldn’t care any less about Palin’s husband’s DUI.
But I do care about the thousands of families who have lost loved ones to drunks behind the wheel. These families should be fired up enough to ask more questions about how both Palin and McCain feel about this issue.
I couldn’t care any less if she personally does not like black people.
But I do care greatly about how the actions of her job will affect my people and me.
I couldn’t care any less about how sarcastic her convention speech was, but I care about the issues. She has a child with Down’s syndrome but recently cut special education funding in Alaska by 64%.
With all this controversy surrounding the McCain-Palin camp, how in the world can America be divided on who should be the next president? Isn’t the choice clear? Oh wait, maybe America is going to start this “voting against” each other thing again as opposed to “voting for” the best candidate. Like when the majority of America was so busy voting against the Democratic Party that they looked up and President Bush was sitting in the oval office. When those thoughts start to take over, Nova Scotia gets more and more beautiful.
Read the following statement twice. If John McCain and Sarah Palin can win this campaign without our votes, they will govern this country as if we don’t exist.
During this year’s Olympics in Beijing, triple world record holder and Olympic champion Usain Bolt ran each qualifying race with just enough speed to slightly win. All he had to do was qualify, right?
Yet, during the finals, Bolt excelled past all of his competitors as if he was in flight and they were on foot. Brother was fired up! He left no margin for error and every win was an undisputed win. At times, he would even look back to see where his competitors were.
If my paranoia about the 2008 presidential election is reality, then we don’t have time to run each race to slightly win. We need to make sure that we are all registered, ready and fired up. The Obama camp needs an undisputed win. We need to stop looking back at our competitor and run past them as if we are in flight and they are on foot.
