R. Barri gives an overview of the book:

For those without direct experience with the seamy, real-life world of prostitution, it can be easy to accept the glamorized depictions of the sex-for-sale industry as it is often portrayed in fiction and Hollywood or sensationalized in the media. In reality, the business of sexual exploitation such as prostitution, sex trafficking, pornography, and sex tourism is far from attractive. PROSTITUTION IN THE DIGITAL AGE updates the subject of prostitution for the 21st century, explaining why the commercial sex trade industry continues to flourish and exploring its proliferation in the digital world of the Internet, cell phones, and text messaging. The grim ramifications of prostitution—such as victimization, substance abuse, HIV, arrest, or even death—are addressed. Among the upper echelon of the sex trade industry, there is an even more secretive super elite group of sex workers. These women sexually service the very rich and are rewarded accordingly. Some can command up to $100,000 a day and make as much as half a million dollars a year.35 Powerful clients are willing to pay thousands of dollars in hourly rates to spend time with an elite call girl, in sessions that could last for hours or even days. Recently, former New York governor Elliot Spitzer was alleged to have spent $4,300 for a date  with a prostitute he  met in a hotel room in Washington D.C., while reportedly spending over $80,000 for high end call girl prostitution in a year.36 Though a significant amount, some experts believe this to be on the low end of what many wealthy men are willing to pay for sex these days.

Top level call girls are often the beneficiaries of what is referred to in the high end sex trade as "The Brick"-- described as "$40,000 in hundred-dollar bills in a package, payment for a long weekend on a yacht in the Caribbean with a super-wealthy 'date' or a week-long trip to Europe to keep company with a sheik." 37

According to one expert on super elite call girls: "They're not full time, they don't consider themselves hookers, they don't have pimps, and they don't talk about money. 'The Brick' is understood and it's paid at the end. They never have to ask."38 Another source knowledgeable on this class of prostitute noted: "You have to live at that level and have a referral, otherwise you'll never meet them." 39 Such referrals typically come from other upper level sex workers, their affluent clients, or other well connected individuals.
