She stands alone in her jeans and red Converse sneakers with the ragged laces. Her T-shirt is one size too small and her braless breasts are one size too big. She’s waiting to order something to eat for the daily breakfast run at BLOG. She’s sleepy and in a bad mood. None of her underwear has dried from the rush to wash yesterday evening. Her jeans are also a little too tight and not at all arousing for her unaccustomed commando performance today. She shaved in the shower this morning and she can feel the rough material rubbing her raw in places that are usually protected by underwear. Not today. Her stomach growls at her, “Hurry up, you lazy girl, choose something already! I’m starving down here.”
She orders a chicken and egg omelet with a large unsweetened green tea, with ice. As she rifles through her LV purse for the necessary NT45, she bumps into another woman behind her.
“Oh, sorry,” she starts to say before actually turning around to face her.
Suddenly her face lights up. This is a surprise! A long lost friend re-discovered at a breakfast shop on a beautiful Wednesday morning.
There is joy in two smiles and four eyes at this reunion. The wet underwear drying slowly on the line at home is forgotten. Her food arrives and it stays uneaten while her friend places her own order and waits for her food. A toasted beef sandwich with a hot cup of black coffee to go.
They don’t talk much to each other. These are the kind of friends that are telepathic. The two women bask in the happy glow of this wonderful accident of meeting up again.
When her friend leaves with her takeaway sandwich, she once more hears and then listens to the demands of her stomach. She breaks the chopsticks out of their paper jail and separates them carefully before gripping them with her right hand. Within minutes her meal is done and the dirty chopsticks are left to lie in the leftover soy sauce on the oblong plate. Throughout the entire feeding session, she smiles with every part of her body, especially her stomach. A double delight!
Her green tea is sipped slowly as her lips tease the red straw. By the time she finishes sucking all the tea into her satisfied stomach all the ice has melted. She jumps back onto her little City Bike and pedals off to work at the Watsons Store. One unexpected moment of surprise and the day is full of life again.
