An article in this morning's NYT included a quote from Wang Wei, Exec. Vice President of the Olympic Organizing Committee for Beijing. In response to a question about the problem of low attendance at many of the Olympic events Wang said:
“We are trying to persuade people to respect their rights to watch the Games.”
Sounds like an invitation to a sestina to me.
Try one -- it's a great alternative to watching the Olmpics on TV.
Here are the words:
Send me your sestinas or any poems based on the quote.
And yes, OK, I've been watching far too much of the Olympics, have learned far too much about beach volley ball, synchronized diving, and Angola's basketball team. I am taking up the sestina because it's more like working a puzzle than writing poetry and no matter how awful it is, I will have done something other than watch the Games.
