After a successful entrepreneurial career that included leading the unprecedented turnaround of Esquire magazine during the 1980s, Phillip Moffitt left his position as editor-in-chief and chief executive officer of the publishing enterprise he created:trading his worldly aspirations to explore the inner life. That journey led him to study Theravada Buddhism, Jungian psychology, yoga, Aikido, and various mind-body healing techniques. He subsequently founded the Life Balance Institute in Tiburon, California, to help others find more meaning and a greater sense of well-being in their lives. In addition, he teaches vipassana meditation at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in North California and at retreat centers around the United States and Canada as well as a weekly meditation class in Marin County, California. His emphasis is on cultivating mindfulness in daily life. In 2010, Phillip was named co-guiding teacher at Spirit Rock. Phillip is the author of Emotional Chaos to Clarity: How to Live More Skillfully, Make Better Decisions, and Find Purpose in Life and Dancing with Life: Buddhist Insights for Finding Meaning and Joy in the Face of Suffering, The Power To Heal, and Medicine’s Great Journey: One Hundred Years of Healing. He has written numerous magazine articles about mindfulness for Yoga Journal, Shambhala Sun, and Body and Soul. His writings have been selected for publication in Best Buddhist Writing 2004 and 2009
