I’ve always been fascinated by those who would attend a professional sporting event such as soccer and only do so to cause trouble. Author Mark Barry’s outstanding novel Ultra Violencehelped me to understand the phenomena and if you are like I am than you will absolutely enjoy reading this book as much as I did.
Told as a narrative Ultra Violence is a comprehensive journey that follows a group of hooligan supporters of the legendary Notts County Football Team. The narrators, whose contemplating suicide because his life was a mess, runs into a former hooligan chum of his that allows the narrator to tell his story and retell the glory days of his youth as a hooligan. His chum Beanie even offers the narrator the chance to participate in one last battle of the hooligans!
Ultra Violence is a well written fictional work based on fact with excellent dialogue, something that I have come to expect from Barry. His use of historical markers throughout Nottingham as well as his ability to describe legendary hooligan battles brings the reader smack dab into the battle as well as the mindset of the participants.
I enjoyed Ultra Violence so much that I invited Mark Barry to join me on my nationally syndicated sports show. You can listen to the show here and purchase a copy of Ultra Violence here. I highly recommend both!
