Phil Cousineau at TEDxSanJoseCA
Storyteller and author Phil Cousineau shares a story of his personal journey -- from growing up French Catholic, playing basketball on the streets of Detroit, to writing for his hometown newspaper and studying journalism, years of travels, and catching the fire of inspiration from the work of Joseph Campbell, which led to a career in documentary screenwriting and teaching on "myth and the movies." Serendipitously, Cousineau seized a fluke chance to work with his mentor Joseph Campbell on a film and book about his life, and his own career writing books and films was launched. This talk centers on the importance of "passing the torch" of mentorship.
"For years, Lawrence Ferlinghetti has been asking, 'Where are San Francisco's great new poets?' The answer is, they are here, and in fact have been here in San Francisco and the Bay Area for a long while.... Phil Cousineau has long been a powerful presence in the Bay Area literary scene, but he is best known as a filmmaker and...writer who has carried on and reinterpreted the work of Joseph Campbell, especially regarding the omnipresent influence of myth in modern life.... Cousineau has been publishing--in very limited editions--collections of his own poetry, whose influence has been noted by a great many other major poets of his generation..."”
