Talk show host Ronn Owens and I have known each other for a long time, and we both used to be young. (I was on Ronn's show yesterday, the podcast of which is here.) These pictures are of a 1976 debate between State Senator Milton "Uncle Miltie" Marks and the challenger for his Sacramento job, SF Supervisor Bob Mendelsohn. Marks, the peripatetic pol who may have inspired the cliched joke, "he shows up at the opening of an envelope", beat back the challenge, as he always did. The moderator was SF Examiner political dean Sid Kossen. That's Ronn in the middle at the other table, KRON reporter Kevin McCarthy on the left and me on the right. We were asking the questions (or digging for ice at the bottom of the glass).
