The worldbuilding is allright. There's a map. It has geology as ours, and some prity names for towns, mountains, and so on. There are some nice architectural touches. The way he describes nature is this: take any nice pond or glade or hill or river that we know of and write about it in positive, yet clear, reasonable, »unpoetic« way...

SANDALS
Her english name is Rain, and I can never remember the Chinese one. She is 16 years old and she comes from the Hunan province. She lived on the farm, and she has been helping her parents on the fields – not only rice fields – since she was five or six. When she came home in the evenings, they had to pull leeches from her legs and arms.
