I love the shade of softest green That grass can sometimes be; A perfect carpet that I’ve seen Beneath a shady tree. And oh, how much I long for Such beauty from my lawn, for Some reason I have been denied The chance to gaze and fill with pride At my own lush scenery And walk upon such greenery.Instead, I’m forced to cultivate A field of weeds, a parking lotFor...

When all seemed lost, and hope was stilled:
It came to pass, one summer day,
A gardener brought inside
With purchased plants a stow-away
That, unknowing, hitched a ride.
He hid, as Nature had conceived,
Unnoticed, where he perched for
sipping nectar, and received
the nourishment he’d searched for.
As yet unseen, this stow-away
camouflaged against the bloom,
now...

I sometimes see the little guy
Scurrying down low
A furtive shadow, still quite shy
A wisp of gray smoke passing by
I sense his presence near, and know
This is our odd one, with us still.
He came among us, almost dead
A fragile puff of fur
“Not much hope,” the doctor said,
“Keep him warm, keep him fed.”
Joshua whispered, “Thank you, Sir,
He’ll be OK. I know he...

I do not know the "could-have-beens,"
only what has come to be:
I am the living consequence
of choices made by me.
Examining each separate leaf -
life's book from its beginning,
how did joy emerge from grief
and losing turn to winning?
I've learned the paths I've taken
were never God-forsaken.
Every triumph, each mistake
led me...

Dear Lord:
The night is quickly fading, now day is drawing nigh,
And for not one single second
Has sleep closed either eye.
Throughout the hours from dusk to dawn
(With neither snore nor drowsy yawn)
Did anything resembling sleep -
(No cat-nap even tried to creep
Up on me, like a silent thief!)
Nor brought with it that sweet relief
for aching body, tired mind
nor...

I've heard it over and over again -
The bigger the word, the more the pain
To understand what one is reading!
But I'll not heed such lazy pleading
To simplify the things I write -
No! I can't give up the fight
To use the whole vocabulary
Comprising my own formulary
Of words I use for the edification
Of those who lack my sophistication!
Sound condescending or...

(For PianoFingers, with Love!)
I've heard it over and over again -

To simplify the things I write -
No! I can't give up the fight
To use the whole vocabulary
Comprising my own formulary
Of words I use for the edification

Thanks be to God for the gift of tea:
The favored drink of many societies
steeped from leaves of many varieties
Tea is its name - a delightful beverage
And many a merchant has gained some leverage
Exporting tons and tons of tea
To satisfy the likes of me.
The fragrant leaves, from which it's brewed,
White, green, or black...

When did the joy of eating
become a sinful passion -
And our senses take a beating
From being slaves to fashion?
The richness of a frosted cake
The salty crunch of chips
Are given up, and in their wake
Leave rock-hard abs, and bony hips.
Which in and of themselves are good
Being slim is no disgrace
But surely tasting, savoring food
Still has its rightful place!...

Whenever I take a morning walk
On a bright and cloudless day
I usually take the time to talk
to my plants along the way.
I speak with gentle tone, for
They're dying from neglect
There's much I must atone for-
They've lacked for my respect.
For though each seed was planted
With all my best intent
It seems I took for granted
That they would be content
To grow,...

About Paula
For as long as I can remember, I have loved words and language. My father taught me to learn how to express myself verbally, and I haven't stopped talking since. I began writing by using poetry, and expanded that - especially in my adult years to include...
