My oldest son passed away at 22. What helps me cope when the pain resurfaces are my mother's words of wisdom. "You child is a gift from heaven. Your job as a parent is to love him unconditionally, guide him through the tough times, and celebrate his good time, so one day he can grow wings and fly on his own."
I realize now that my boy was on loan to me. Once he gathered all his heart could hold, making him whole and complete, it was time for him to fly home.
For years my wings were clipped. In 2010 I wrote and illustrated a book, BELIEVE, dedicating it to my son, and all families who walked in these same shoes. The creative process provided the strength I needed to once again live my life fully. The book focuses on honoring my child's journey, finding the gifts he left behind, setting him free, and the importance of keeping his soul alive in my heart by continuing to celebrate his spirit.
