where the writers are
NETWO Writer's Conference

As you’ve probably noticed, I tend to blog during the latter half of the week. I try to keep my blogging consistent, usually from Thursday to Saturday, depending on whether the weather is cooperative.  The rest of the week is dedicated to working on current compositions.

Last week the weather was not cooperative and I didn’t get much posted.  And this weekend I’ll be gone.

So I’m dedicating today through Friday if I have time, to blog posting (among other things) because this weekend I’m going to the NETWO Writer’s Roundup, Writer’s Conference on the lovely shores of Lake Bob Sandlin, in Pittsburgh TX.  I’m very excited to attend. This is going to be a great weekend.

And of course, I’ll report back afterwards to let you all know how it went.

I have to admit to feeling slightly apprehensive about this. I’m a shy creature by nature and I don’t make friends easily but the friends I do make I keep and treasure forever.  My longest and dearest friendship began in 1977 and we're still friends today.  We don’t always see eye to eye on everything but I know that if I ever have a problem or I want someone to tell me the truth instead of blowing sunshine up my ass, I know she’ll always give me a point blank, dead on answer.

So I’m a bit shy about going. My husband won’t be there to run interference, and I’m scared my inner dork will run loose and I will not win friends and influence people but anger people and alienate them.  Just like I did during that awful experience with the work at home job training disaster last January.

I’ll be good.  I’ll do my best to be anyway.

Winning Miss Congeniality is not the most important thing.  I understand that. The most important thing is going to come from what I learn from this conference and what I can use as a writer and as a human being.  And in that regard I have outlined objectives for myself.

So my main objective to meet the agent I selected on the form and hopefully come home with a signed contract.  I am not in a big hurry about that though, oddly enough. I had an agent at one point and the results were less than lucrative. This time I’m hoping things will be substantially different.

My second objective is to actually learn something. Yes, there are workshops, and I am attending as many as I can. There’s a big one on Friday that lasts most all afternoon. It’s about character development, and my inner dork is running loose, shouting inside my head, I don’t need that! I know how to write already. I have a Master’s Degree that says so!

Yeah that’s all true, but.  I know that writing is a constant learning process. I am going to the workshop because I can bring back new information, new techniques and new ways to make my work shine.

The third and probably the most important objective is to have fun. Which goes back to the beginning of this essay.  I want to come back with new friendships, new experiences and generally relax and have a great time with people who love the written word and language as much as I do. And keep the inner dork locked up in the attic where she belongs.

I’ll let you know how it goes
