Poetry Los Gatos, under the direction of Los Gatos poet laureate Parthenia M. Hicks, participated in a Community Open Mic event at Great Bear Coffee Tuesday evening.
The session attracted about 40 residents, including 24 readers—writers and non-writers to the popular coffee shop. The gathering as one of several activities coordinated by Hicks in honor of National Poetry Month in April.
Los Gatos boasts its own Poet's Canyon and poets such as Sara Bard Field, Charles Erskine Scott Woods as well as many visiting writers including John Steinbeck and Frank Norris have deep connections to the town, Hicks said.
The open mic forum was a chance for those who love poetry to get together, hear some cool poetry, read a poem or just sit, relax and listen among the company of friends, Hicks said.

April as National Poetry Month in Los Gatos
Open Mic at the Great Bear was the wrap up evening for all of the events we presented in April in Los Gatos and certainly the most fun.
Others events included: an Ekphrastic event, EXPOSURES, in which Los Gatos poets responded to the art of photography.
Movie night with a showing of Il Postino, a film featuring the relationship between Pablo Neruda and an Italian postman who takes lessons from the master poet as he tries to woo his true love.
The most remarkable part was seeing so many attend poetry events who never had previously. More events scheduled. Next up: September.
