Sexy! Carmelina Vargas is definitely that and more as she sings and sways in her music video Love: “Turn off the lights. Take off our clothes. The rest is for no one to know…
The 20 something-year-old Latina is an enchantress. It doesn’t seem as though she’d have any reason to be uncomfortable in her beautiful body.
“Latinas have a more natural, curvy, slightly bigger build than what is touted as the ideal in America. We struggle because on a daily basis we are fed images of women that do not represent us. However, when we are given the opportunity to showcase our talents, we come out shining because our true beauty comes from within,” Carmelina says.
What lies beneath the surface of this NYC-based Pop/R&B singer is indeed radiant. She is a Stage 2 breast cancer survivor who underwent a double mastectomy. In July the recording artist received special Congressional recognition for her work in breast cancer education and prevention.
Carmelina says that life was never easy for her. She understood from an early age she was different. Vargas’ family migrated from the Dominican Republic when she was eight.
“I had a hard time adjusting to conventional ways in my new country. Kids where more outgoing and there were so much to be learned.”
Carmelina whose parents underscored the importance of education went to college at the age of 17. Among many things the young woman takes pride in her health. When she felt a small, hard lump on her left breast she made an appointment to see her doctor. When Carmelina Vargas learned she had cancer she went on online to research the disease and her options. She also spoke with friends who had lost a special person in their lives to cancer.
