Memorial Day weekend is the official start of the summer vacation season in America. This weekend, when millions of Americans take to the road, seems like a particularly appropriate time to recognize Grete Waitz, the Norwegian-born woman who died of cancer on April 11 at the age of 57 of cancer knew a lot about American roads. She’d run hundreds and hundreds of miles of them most notably in New York City. Grete won the New York City Marathon nine times — more than any other runner.
