Five Things I Want to Do
After the Rising

I’ve been writing a lot about creative intentions and thinking about my own for 2012. Now that the new year is settling in, I’d like to share some of what I’ll be up to over the coming 12 months.

1. PUBLISHING. It’s no news that I’m a convert to indie publishing, and have taken my rights back from Penguin so I can publish my own work as ebook titles and print-on-demand (POD). Just before Christmas, I republished my first novel (originally Lovers’ Hollow), giving it back its original title: After The Rising. It’s early days but I can already say that I’m finding independent authorship a more rewarding experience than traditional publishing. So this year I’ll be carrying on with that: in January, a sequel to the first novel, called Before the Fall ; in Spring, a nonfiction book, How To Create Anything. And two more novels before next Christmas.
2012 INTENTION #1: To self-publish at least three more books.

2. POEMS. I’ve come to think of poetry as the purest form of writing. The poems rise in a different, much less conscious, way than the longer prose works and, for me, having enough space in my life to to be receptive to a poem means I’m living right — in balance and not too busy.
2012 INTENTION #2: To organise life so that I stay open to poems.

3. BLOGGING. From your feedback I’m hearing that what you most want from this blog is short, regular pieces about the creative process — and some more insight into my own process. So that’s what I’ll be aiming to provide over the course of 2012, three times a week or so.
2012 INTENTION #3: To hone the Go Creative! Blog.

4. READING. 2012 is the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens’s birth. In honour of the master, I’m reading everything he wrote. I downloaded a complete works to my kindle – a lot kinder on the wrists, and pocket, than a print version would have been – and began at the beginning. But they’d arranged the books alphabetically, beginning with American Notes, the account of his trip to the US in 1841.  I prefer reading them in chronological order  and so (with a quick detour to read his last, unfinished novel, Edwin Drood, prompted by the BBC’s dramatisation) that’s what I’m doing.
2012 INTENTION #4: Make every second book I read this year a Dickens book, until I’ve read them all.

5. WALKING. Dickens was a great walker and he adored the streets of London, as do I. Now that I’ve settled in this great city, I want to get to know it better. And I also want to walk more, for the physical and the creative benefits. So I’m going to combine the two.
2012 INTENTION #5: To walk to, and/or from, work (six miles approx), taking lots of different routes [and, as always, stopping en route for coffee & FREEwriting ].

There is one other biggie that I’m not going to tell you about for another two weeks. Let’s just say a website is in preparation and a lot of you are going to like it… a lot.

In the meantime, research shows that writing our intentions down makes us more likely to deliver so I’m opening comments on this blog post, for you to put yours in writing below.

What do you intend to make happen in 2012? How’s it going so far?

New Year's Resolutions

I like your post.  I am in awe of anyone who resolves to read the whole of Dickens in one year.  I started reading 'Little Dorrit' just over two years ago, and am about half way! I can't quite get to grips with the twists and turns of Dickens' writing.  Last week, I watched the BBC dramatisation of 'Bleak House', which is wonderful but – I know – it doesn't quite count.

Like you, I live in London (Fulham) and love walking for miles, in the parks but also along the streets.

One of my resolutions for 2012, is to get serious about my writing and to beat procrastination to a pulp.

Independent vs Traditional Publishing

I look forward to following your blog and I hope to glean nuggets of gold that I can apply to my own publishing journey.  I live in Southern California but love to visit England, so maybe we can one day meet for a cup of tea. Sharon

Epublishing

I was in a great hurry to publish my backlist on Kindle, and I did it all in one year.  In retrospect, I would've released one book every four to six months.  There is a certain rhythm I've noticed in Kindle publishing, and having something new to promote every few months is a good way to go, not all at once.

Poetry

I like your description of poetry, Orna. -- Very accurate and insightful. And the phrase 'in balance and not too busy' reminds me of a line in 'The Sound of Music.' Von Trapp says to Maria "Constant activity suggests a life filled with purpose." I look forward to following your blog.

Best, Steve

Dickens

Ha! I made the same Dickens resolution. Dickens completely grabbed me when I was a young teen, and I wanted to reread a couple of his novels to see if I'd still feel the same way. Instead, I started with an audio version of Tale of Two Cities -- which I hadn't read -- and listen while walking.

Also, I'm taking a poetry class for the first time in ages with Matthew Dickman All-American Poet and feel as if I've accidentally walked into a graduate level French class without speaking a word of the language.

2012 writing projects!

Knock on wood, I'm finally emerging from several years of back-to-back "too much emergency stuff to do" and starting to look at writing projects again.  I've got three big goals here for 2012...

1) After revamping my first essay collection, "Running with Stilettos," (now in the midst of renovation) I want to was to market my three books (possibly with a coffee mug with my signature stilettos photo wrapped around) as a great "gift set" for holidays and birthdays.

2) I want to put my second collection, "Heck on Heels," on Amazon as a Kindle edition with full-color nature photographs (the original print version was B&W).

3) And I want to finally get back to the suspense novel I started about six years ago!

And on this gorgeous sunny day in January where it's over fifty degrees in Wisconsin, anything seems possible!!

A Luddite's Resolutions

Writing our intentions down makes us more likely to deliver.

Ooh, I like it! However this works, visualizing tactic or creative juju, here goes:

Luddite that I am, I pledge to myself to really investigate the world of epublishing to find the best way to get  the 3 novels to which I own the rights into the hands of readers.

Using a slightly different section of my frontal lobes than the part that writes fiction, I want to start a family histoy blog for my far-flung cousins & their kids using the treasure trove of family photos inherited from my mom.

Lastly, I'll continue to manufacture time for the above while maintaing my day job as a film critic and arts scene blogger.

Great post, Orna, and it's spawned an interesting conversation!

BTW, I loved Dickens when I read him in school, & went through another Dickens binge in the '80s, when the Royal Shakespeare Co's Nicholas Nickleby was broadcast on TV in the US. I devoured Nickleby, Bleak House & Our Mutal Friend in a few weeks. It can be done, so hang in there!
