It seems my article about hate in America stirred people up at AOL as well as here at Red Room. Here is their follow up post of the letters to the editor that came to them.
I particularly love the last for comic effect.
On a serious note, Brian Erickson’s letter makes a good point about how strong...

My op-ed yesterday on AOL stirred up a lot of interest and responses both positive and negative. Here are a few observations from me and then the unedited emails.
(BTW, since AOL News doesn’t allow comments, I’d love it if Red Room authors and members would comment on my blog post here that...

3 questions.
How was your day?
What was the best part of your day?
What are you planning for tomorrow?
Or.
What are you working on?
What is exciting to you about it?
How can I help?
One exercise I occasionally ask my coaching clients to go through is the “3 Questions” exercise. For 24 hours,...

Campbell’s soup recently recalled 15 million pounds of Spaghetti-Ohs.
That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement. So why would I want to buy their products? And why do I think all of you should as well?
Because there wasn’t a single complaint about the product. No consumers. No stores. Not the FDA....

I was walking through the airport in Milwaukee during a layover and the shoe shine guy calls out to me, “Can’t close a deal with them dirty heals. Only takes 5 minutes.”
I wanted to grab a bite. So I kept walking.
After eating I walked back past the stand and his partner calls out, “Can’t be at...

One of my grad school professors who taught me about consulting used to love telling prospective clients, “It seems like you don’t need any help.” He said this was one of his most effective lines for getting people who claimed they were in great shape to open up about what was really troubling them...

If I ran a brick and mortar store I would have 2 concerns.
Get people to the store.
Get people to stay and keep buying.
In women’s clothing stores I think there should be a room off to the side that has a pinball machine and a Wii. Dads and kids can go in there while Moms shop. More time to shop...

There’s a common question among corporate executives about whether leaders are born or made.
This question is simplistic and problematic. It allows people who don’t know how or don’t want to spend the time or money to neglect developing leadership in those around them.
This question also promotes...

After a speech a woman came up to me to thank me for my message. She told me she tried to live by similar principles. Then she told me of her time in the hospital battling cancer. She described her prognosis as short of terminal, but not short enough for comfort. But she refused to define herself...

In our western society we don’t listen much. We interrupt. We value entertainment and achievement and competition. So we tell stories and we one-up each other.
You have a horrible boss story? Well let me tell you about the ogre I used to work for.
Oh, it’s a great boss story? Well I once worked for...

In politics they call it the coattail effect when a lesser candidate wins by picking up voters who only really showed up to vote for the larger election but then pulled all their party knobs for every race. Business provides the same opportunity.
A shoe store in my area just threw a Sex and the...

This week I gave a speech at the Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock. An audience member asked me what effect volunteering has on living a more heroic life. The answer is a lot.
We need to broaden, “you are what you eat.” Let’s make it, “you become what you consume.”
When we consume extreme...
