If there is one thing the Right Wing Commentariat has in common: They have not served in the military. Rush, Sean, Glen, Bill O, Savage (Weiner), together have exactly no days of service. This fact helped me defend myself at dinner in Iraq. Occasionally I was surrounded at dinner by Republicans. They would ask me how I could be a Democrat. I could point to the weapon under my chair then to the TV and say, "He never served." Like firing a shotgun in a subway, I couldn't miss. If FOX News was on, the commentator was going to be patriotic (in his own mind anyway) and never served.
Patriotism can express itself in service of all kinds. But men who served calling others cowards is not patriotism. Those on the Right rage about a culture war, but when they redefine patriotism to avoid personal sacrifice, they put themselves at the lead of cultural decline. What could be more harmful to any culture than to have millions following public "patriots" who let others fight for them. The commentators who are old enough to be eligible for the draft were draft dodgers. At the time I enlisted, I did not care if other men my age avoided the draft. But ten years later those same guys went from "give peace a chance" to Reagan supporters. Courage is one of the four virtues Aristotle thought central to a good life--along with temperance, wisdom and justice.
The radio TV patriots show none of those virtues, but least of all, Courage.
