Three years ago I re-enlisted in the Army after serving 11 years in the 70s and early 80s. I went to Iraq older than the parents of most of the soldiers I served with. And I am a Democrat. That made me more unusual than my age.

About Neil
I write about chemistry and the history of chemistry, but in 2009 I wrote about soldiers in Iraq. I served with Task Force Diablo, an Army Aviation unit.

More Story
Dale--I turned 56 the day we left Kuwait for Iraq. It was fun in a lot of ways to be back after 23 years as a civilian. and the Army is a meritocracy so even if I was an old Democrat, I could write, so I wrote soldier profiles and took pictures the last five months I was there. My commander liked a good joke and I was among the top ten on the fitness test in our unit, so he put me in charge of remedial fitness for the guys who were out of shape when we mobilized.
Glad to be home, but haven't ruled out going back.
