No question, my favorite poem is The Divine Comedy. I went to college after seven years in the Army, mostly as a tank commander. My first course at Penn State in 1980 was Western Traditions 2. We read Mark Musa's translation. The prof. who taught us, Theodora Graham, loved the poem and her love was infectious. I have re-read Commedia seven times since, in several different translations. Most recently, I lead a book group on Tallil Ali Air Base in Iraq. For six months we met every Tuesday night, first reading Inferno, then taking 12 weeks to read Aeneid, then Purgatorio. We did nto get to Paradiso, but were heading home and thought that would be Paradise enough. Twelve years ago I read all 100 cantos to my wife--a canto a day. We have read dozens of books to each other since, but Commedia was first.
