Do overs, time travel, and second chances are some of my favorite plots. Generally speaking, they are the story ideas that somehow drill straight down into my subconscious and make me ponder the power of decisions, and how often we wish we could take something back, or do something differently.
A do over.
It's the premise of Being Erica, a show I freaking loved.
What are your best time travel, do over, or second chance stories?
"Not Applicable," by Kyle Schoenfeld
In a world where the Death Machine has made it possible to know how everyone will die, regimes can reach whole new levels of terror, and anyone who appears different - or dissident - can be neutralized with a little effort and creativity. This story reminded me - in a slight way - of "Lazarus Reactor Fission Sequence" but where Tom Francis went somewhere light and breezy, Kyle Schoenfeld aims (and hits) something much darker.
This story is as clever as it is dark, and kudos to Schoenfeld for coming up with such a unique approach to the machine that's never wrong. And maybe - just maybe - there's a way to find a second chance in a world where the Death Machine offers such a constant.
