Okay, disclaimer here...I do not have a tattoo, nor do I expect to get one in the near future. Having said that, they do intrigue me and because it seems to be a rite of passage any more, I have often contemplated what compels a person to get tattooed, choice of tattoo, and so on.
I say that here because I have been thinking about this subject for quite some time and have some thoughts about it that I may share. I bring it up because of a news item about a young girl who "claims" she fell asleep during a tattoo session in which she was planning to get only three stars tattooed on her face and ended up with fifty-six tiny stars covering one side of her face. Consider me naive if you think I believe this. I'm sorry, but I don't think anyone could fall asleep during a tattoo to begin with, let alone for that much needle time.
Personal opinion here, but I think she thought it would be cool until she went home and somebody asked just what she was thinking (or if she was thinking). (Or perhaps it was when she really looked at what her face was permanently going to look like. )That's when the story came out that she fell asleep, etc.
More on tattooes later...

Allergic to pain
To think that ink is only skin deep... I can never join the dots on my starspangled skin because I have too many dots and an allergy. Yes, I'm allergic to pain and I hate needles with a passion. I respect anyone with the skin thick enough to sit through a session of sewing ink into the skin. I cannot do that. As for the starspangled girl's face... Maybe she could do stripes on the other side? Then she could change her name to Flag.
Um, no.
As a tattooed person with a couple of friends who are tattoo artists, I am certain that no one could remain asleep while having her face tattooed! Even if the girl had drugged herself ... no (licensed, reputable) tattoo artist would work on someone in that condition.
Well ... they're making amazing advances in tattoo removal these days. ...

Quentin...love the idea of stripes and changing her name to Flag. How fourth of July!
Charles...thanks for the confirmation. I rather suspected that to begin with (that no reputable tattoo artist would do that or even the sleeping bit)
