Right now in Erie County for the month of April, we are having what is known as an All county read. It is actually part of The Big Read which is sponsored by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The book, as you may have guessed if you have read any of my postings, is Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. Along with the read there have been events scheduled. Charles Shields, who has written a biography of Ms. Lee, has been a guest speaker for one event. The kickoff event was at the local mall where several hundred copies of the book were handed out. The schools are doing events. The libraries, too! How great is that! People seem to be into reading. Some are even wearing badges that say the following: I am on page ___. Have you read it yet?
And yes, I am reading it. As for me, I am about a third of the way through and am enjoying it. Although touted as a true American classic, I have never read it until now. I find that I am reading more classics (and all the way to the end unlike during my high school days) these days. I still like to read my favorite authors, but to read those novels that everyone should read sometime during their lifetime...well, maybe I will actually do it!
