I love America. I love her rich history, her spectacular landscapes and her interesting people. I believe that our Founding Fathers were brave and insightful, having learned many hard lessons under British rule. I want to restore this country to the glory that was their vision for a free America. Last summer, I was distraught over the direction our country was taking. We were losing our liberties, spending ourselves into bankruptcy, and turning our backs on the Constitution. I have faith though that it is not too late to return to our roots. It is that hope that inspired me to write this poem.
THE AMERICAN TRADITION
I need more information,
Or at least some confirmation
That my fears are groundless
And my freedom is still boundless.
Today our politicians plot and scheme
To subvert our Founding Fathers’ dream,
To put asunder all their grand ideals
And bury us in shady bailout deals.
Is it audacious to hope for restoration
Of conservative principles for our nation?
We must stop these insane spending sprees
Before we’re enslaved to foreign guarantees.
Have we lost forever the Blessings of Liberty?
Can we never insure domestic tranquility?
We the People must stand up and proclaim
The promise of a more perfect Union’s fame.
Let us seek together the American tradition
Of hard work, free enterprise, and personal volition.
Those Self-evident truths … always hold dear
Our Unalienable rights … protect and revere.
The time is now for us to rise and believe,
To grant our country a well-earned reprieve!
And free her from the chains of debts
That promise increasing terror threats.
American Independence will survive
On inspiration, adventure and a will to drive
Beyond these woes to higher ground
Where all are equal and none are crowned.
My country, full of grace beyond measure,
I give you my utter devotion and future.
You will again be glorious from sea to sea,
And We the People … we will be free.
