I am old enough to remember a time in American society when there was no question about what it meant to be a mother and no one would have been foolish enough to read a book on parenting. Being a mother in that more sane era meant first being a wife, then birthing a child and, together with your husband, making a home for that child that was as loving, happy, hopeful and secure as possible.
