where the writers are
Writing Quotes

I sent out the reminder for my writer social this evening. We're six writers, a few with published short stories. We meet in a bar every other Thursday, drink and talk for an hour to two, writers bonding about life and writing.

I like including a quote from a writer in the reminder. Today I went to "Quotable Quotes on Writers and Writing" (http://www.logicalcreativity.com/jon/quotes.html) and chose Anatole Broyard:  "Either a writer doesn't want to talk about his work, or he talks about it more than you want."

There are honorable mentions:

You may be able to take a break from writing, but you won't be able to take a break from being a writer... - Stephen Leigh
Manuscript: something submitted in haste and returned at leisure. - Oliver Herford
Half my life is an act of revision. - John Irving

We are a species that needs and wants to understand who we are. Sheep lice do not seem to share this longing, which is one reason why they write so little. - Anne Lamott
There's no such thing as writer's block. That was invented by people in California who couldn't write.- Terry Pratchett
If the artist does not fling himself, without reflecting, into his work, as Curtis flung himself into the yawning gulf, as the soldier flings himself into the enemy's trenches, and if, once in this crater, he does not work like a miner on whom the walls of his gallery have fallen in; if he contemplates difficulties instead of overcoming them one by one...he is simply looking on at the suicide of his own talent. - Honore de Balzac
Books aren't written, they're rewritten. Including your own. It is one of the hardest things to accept, especially after the seventh rewrite hasn't quite done it... - Michael Crichton
Rejection slips, or form letters, however tactfully phrased, are lacerations of the soul, if not quite inventions of the devil - but there is no way around them.- Isaac Asimov
Tell the readers a story! Because without a story, you are merely using words to prove you can string them together in logical sentences. - Anne McCaffrey
We do not write because we want to; we write because we have to.- Somerset Maugham
We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospection.- Anais Nin
To have something to say is a question of sleepless nights and worry and endless ratiocination of a subject - of endless trying to dig out of the essential truth, the essential justice. - F. Scott Fitzgerald
All good books are alike in that they are truer than if they had really happened and after you are finished reading one you will feel that all that happened to you and afterwards it all belongs to you; the good and the bad, the ecstasy, the remorse and sorrow, the people and the places and how the weather was. If you can get so that you can give that to people, then you are a writer. - Ernest Hemingway
So many insights and opinions about that help me as I struggle, refocus, fall down and get back up again. Just like playing football, or being drunk. - Me
