Ah, the stormy malaise keeping my muse trapped in harbor has finally moved offshore and dispersed. My recalcitrant character has returned to Chapter 19 and re-engaged with the chapter.
I attribute part of my breakthrough to reading someone else's book. I picked up The Sense of An Ending again and after finishing the first thirty-one pages, my character was ready to continue our journey through the novel. He and I went for a walk. When we felt an agreement was at hand, I headed for the Beanery, sat and typed. Felt good to be writing fiction.
Meanwhile, I'd been struggling with a short story. I had a concept, idea, character, but no story. Various openings presented themselves and collapsed. Then late last night as the calendar changed pages, a story circulated my head on stretched wings and gently settled in. After an hour of intense hammering on the keyboard, the first draft was done. I edited and revised it today.
It's been a good couple days of writing like crazy.
