Walking this morning under shadow, sunshine and blue sky, I smelled winter's arrival. The temperature, for the scientist, was forty-eight degrees, but the wind used my face to sharpen its blade. Winter's smell carried my footsteps into Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Korea, Germany. I walked and smelled, remembering what I saw and where I went when I smelled winter back in the present before it became my past as I looked for my future.
