A friend's mother died last week.
She was over ninety years old and had been ill for the last year. Her death didn't surprise anyone.
My friend's mother was prepared for her death. "It was beautiful, just perfect," my friend said, apparently a little abashed as she struggled for the right sentiment. "My Mom was a bird lover. It was a beautiful spring morning. Her window was open and birds were singing in the trees outside. She asked us to play I'll Fly Away. Then she passed away as the music played. It was so perfect that I expected a director to step out and say, 'Cut'.
"We came home for a day after the funeral and then my husband and I went on a trip to New Orleans that we'd planned months ago. A brass band was playing our first day there, and played I'll Fly Away. As I laughed, I waved at the sky and thought, Thanks, Mom."
