A Teachers' Response

Two sayings infuriate me:

1. "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach."

2. "Good enough for government work."

There are probably a million more sayings that infuriate me but these two stay atop the list. Teachers are my heroes. I've learned so much more than just books, not just from academic teachers but teachers in the military and corporate world. Teaching is a powerful occupation, underappreciated. I think America and the world owes a great deal to teachers.

MoveOn sent this in their newsletter. It's a comedic response to the question posed to a teacher, "What do you make?" I think the comedian, Taylor Mali, eloquently answers the question.

At one point I was a teacher

At one point I was a teacher in the Thai Naval Academy. Technically speaking my work was, when it failed to reach my goals , technically speaking good enough for government business .

But yes, I do hate it when people who say "Those who can't, Teach" I have been a teacher for 8 years and it was tougher (and more rewarding) than most of the jobs my friends have.
