Everyone is posting about gun control, so I will join the rant. Gun control is the third rail of American politics. Most politicians believe that if they touch it they will die, and they are probably right. Hard to believe that when I was a kid owning a machine gun was a Federal crime that would bring a long prison sentence. We now have gun de-control. Millions of Americans passionately believe that their freedom and security hinge on gun ownership. If you don't believe me, visit some online forums on weapons and gun control and you will enter a very scary world. Gun rights nuts just bury their liberal opponents on gun control, outside of a few big cities. Even if stringent gun control was somehow enacted, there are enough weapons out there to provide an armory for any psychopath for the next two hundred years. Even if the bonehead Republicans lost their majority in Congress I doubt the Democrats would have the guts to seriously tackle gun control beyond a little window dressing. Something like fifty people are shot every day in this country and we mostly are pretty comfortable with that because not many of them are middle-class white children. Seriously tackling gun control would require a sea change in American politics. I'll amend that, seriously tackling many of our problems would require a sea change in American politics.
