Christmasville is the story of Mary Jane Higgins who suspects that there is more to Christmasville than what meets the eye. What the reader discovers at the beginning of the novel is that the town in which she resides - Christmasville - is situated on a 4 x 8 model train platform. The remaining eleven chapters reveal the adventures and discoveries of Mary Jane as she embarks on a series of perilous journeys, culminating in what is typically regarded as a "surprise ending."
If Mary Jane was motivated by her search for the truth, her spirit of independence and personal faith in Christmasville, Madeleine and Esmeralda are propelled forward by motives quite different in Finding Christmasville, the second book of the trilogy. Madeleine, who is a daughter of the Magian line, is bequeathed calinda al emeris magus - the "gift of the fourth king" - which enables her to perceive what others cannot. But their are prices for such gifts. The bloom of a rose, or the fruit of a tree does not come without the promise of a thorn or the threat of a blight.
For Esmeralda, who once read Tarot cards for Mary Jane on First Night, the quest forward is impeded by that affliction which haunts all who Christmasville home: memory - the multiple perforations of memory, which prevents her from summoning images of her past, of her father, her mother, of her brother Oscar...and what became of them all.
