The first thing I saw in Japan was a corpse. It was lying under a canvas sheet on a gurney in the Tokyo airport, the shoulders and feet bound by wide leather cargo belts. A warm mist clouded the windows of the shuttle that took us from the plane to the terminal.
This is the opening paragraph of my book, “Dizzy Sushi.” I lived in Japan for a year between 1988 and 1989 when Emperor Hirohito died. And although the body I saw in those first moments landing in Tokyo was not the emperor’s, the spectre of a ghost haunted my time in the country.
I taught English conversation in Osaka, studied Zen at a monastery in the Japanese Alps, lived in a Unagi- (Eel)-shaped house in Kyoto, shopped at the YMCA kimono sale, walked to the subway along the Kamo River with geisha...every day was part of an exotic routine.
"Dizzy Sushi" has been accepted for co-publication by Tres Chicas Books. To raise funds for the printing of 1,000 copies, we have a Kickstarter campaign. This fundraiser ends Sunday, November 18 at 10:30AM. Visit: http://tinyurl.com/dizzykickstarter
