Hi, and welcome to my Red Room homepage! Let me tell you a little bit about how I came to write my first book...
My parents got divorced when I was six, and my mother had been my father’s second marriage. (I also had three half brother’s from his first marriage who’d lived with my mother and father for over a decade.) My parents’ divorce was not amicable and they fought over my custody. Eventually, my father moved to Colorado while my mother stayed in California. I flew back and forth by myself from the time when I was eight years old, and stayed with my father on holidays or summers. Later, when they both lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, I had to deal with switching homes every two weeks. Both my parents dated and remarried, and my father later divorced and married for a fourth time.
Growing up through all of this, I was lucky enough to have my three older half brothers, who’d all dealt with my father’s first divorce. Though I no longer lived with them, both of my parents made an effort to bring us together whenever possible, and thanks to them, I was given a unique perspective on my parents’ relations. Thanks to the support system I had and was able to expand, I saw the best elements of my parents’ divorce, and as I met more and more kids who’s parents had split, I realized that we had a lot of shared opinions and discoveries that we’d had to figure out for ourselves. I wrote The Bright Side to help other kids through these situations when it often feels like no one gets it, or cares to. Most recently, I graduated from Johns Hopkins University in June of 2007 with a BA in Writing, and I just moved back home to San Francisco, CA.
