Loving and Writing Together by Maryanne Raphael
An old picture of Lennox and me sitting at the beach in Kingston, Jamaica .brought me back. We are both in our early twenties and madly in love. We are both writers and decide to write our love story together. We each keep journals throughout the sixties. Lennox is black, born in Trinidad. I am white, born in Waverly, Ohio. In those days our marriage was not recognized in several states. But our love was strong enough to see us through everything.
We even took a greyhound bus through the south a few weeks before the Freedom Riders.
Our love was crowned in December 1968 when our son Raphael Raphael was born.
A few years later I was diagnosed as Bi-Polar and spent time in several hospitals.
We divorced but remained good friends. After we had been divorced twenty-five years I found the manuscript we had begun when we were together. Lennox was in Copenhagen and I was in Hawaii at the time but we managed to finish the love story we started long ago. Our son Raphael wrote the introduction. Hopewell Publishers did our book Garden of Hope, Autobiography of a Marriage and we won first prize from the San Diego Book Awards of 2009..
