A Timeless TaleAs with most people I had to give myself permission to declare a favorite novel. Permission granted with the statement that I have many favorite novels. However, Number One on my list has to be, WOMEN IN LOVE by D. H. Lawrence. It is a timeless tale with expressions of human emotions as defined in very complex relationships. The sisterly bond of Ursula and Gudrun, the two main characters in the novel, are introduced to the reader as kindred spirits who rely on the existence of each other to face their everyday lives. In modern terminology I would label them “co-dependents.” However, Lawrence allows the sisters’ reliance on each other to develop and result into the growth of distinction and separation of personalities. His characterization of changes in life, the challenges of different opinions, and finally the interpretation and consequences of love leaves the reader with an experience to be remembered.
