Design Modification noun: Mistake. As in, "the fact that one sleeve is five inches longer than the other is not a mistake, it is a design modification." Can also be used to excuse dropped stitches, off-center cables, and color work not found in nature. Much like a cat falling off a table and then glaring at any human who might have seen it as if to say "I meant to do that," you meant your project to look exactly the way it came out. Should any intrepid soul at your knitting group point out a mistake, all you need to do is to smile enigmatically and say "That isn't a mistake, it is a design modification. I think slavishly following a designer's pattern shows a shocking lack of creativity on the part of the knitter, don't you?" No one will ever say anything negative about your knitting again. Asymmetry is in, and if it isn't when you are reading this, perhaps you could start a new trend.
