OK I’ll be braveand open up. My name is martin ewen and professionally I am an unhappy stilt pantomime.I was born in 63, I was a child prodigy, by the time I had left the post natalclinic I had graduated as a doctor and was already specializing in bone marrowdisorders. My childhood was spectacularly uneventful, I mostly wrote books. Myparents were both hardworking professionals, my father (before his accident) wasa human cannonball and my mother was an adhesive chemist. They met by chance whena spiteful clown changed my fathers trajectory before a matinee and he flew askewand landed on my mothers date, killing him. In the trauma counseling and legalwrangling that followed they grew close and fell in love. I am the oldest of 4and a half children, my youngest brother Paul has a seintinent lump on his neckwith lips that we suspect is an unborn twin, occasionally it sings. My probationofficer gave me permission to attend clown school in 1983. I was then 20. Theclown school was run by Alan Clay who uses the Socretian method. The first timeI had to wear red-nose in Public I chain-whipped a pram. The baby laughed, themother thought I was charming Later I found a way to shoot dead squid over buildings.I was always a clowns clown. This was difficult in that there were very few clownsand if you didn’t have one or two in your audience, no-one laughed. I gave uplaughing professionally ten years ago and I’ve never been happier. I spend mydays sneering at a public who find me amusing I think because I try so superficiallyto be happy. I sneer at myself sometimes just for the practice. I have worked22 years over more than 25 Countries in over 100 citys and towns. I write.
Gravity, ennue, the tragedy of circumstance, occaisionally a dictionary, facepaint, Stockholm syndrome , antidepressants , sexual friction, curiousity, a finely honed impulsivity, malice , oh I'm sorry you want me to list writers I aspire to. Well i guess you can tell a lot about a person by the books they read. i don't feel like trotting out who I'd most like to be like. You can do that, that's your job as a reader.
i have a screenplay produced and touring Canada called 'Nagasaki circus' you can google it.
I am working at taking the alphabetical names of the towns and cities I've performed in over the last 20+ years and using them as a jump-off point for 26 short stories.
I've selected 'comedy' as my genre but hopefully it's a little deeper and darker than that, although some of it is admittedly fluff.
I'm a professional international clown soloist, I devour media and cultures, I am darkly funny as a survival mechanism and I'm distinctly proficient at that, I survive myself, my inner shroud and my interests are varied. I live in Hawaii so spend a great deal of time outside.
