The two sweetest words in a writer's lexicon are "on assignment." These words validate your skills. You have been recognized as a writer, as one whose words are flexible enough to cover a range of topics. You're the one to bear witness to the shocking, the new, or the heavenly. You will "cover" it.
Poets & Writers has assigned me to cover the writing residency at Red Cinder Creativity Center on the Big Island. I go there with a double purpose: write poems and experience the place and the mood for other writers. That's a serious responsibility.
I love writing for Poets & Writers. The editor, Mary Gannon, is hands-on. She's brilliant, she's meticulous, she has many gifts. She can tighten a story and bring out its colors. She's nice, too.
Other sweet words: "Tax writeoff." (That's my husband speaking.)
"Circulation of 70,000 plus."
