Not just erotic energy in today's mail, but the piano virtuosity of David Del Tredici, and the shattering, exquisite and comedic voice of soprano Melissa Fogarty. David sent the CD with the song cycles he performed at the Thalia on Broadway, December 4th. One of the cycles, "My Favorite Penis Poems," includes my poem, "Trout"--here called Die Forelle (after the Schubert song). David is known not just for his Pulitzer composition, "Alice," but for being the father of neo-Romantic music. Not only that, but he's an imp, a Trickster in his gorgeous playing. Just Allen Ginsberg, David Antler, Edward Field and Rumi, hanging out (so to speak) in this luscious song cycle!
My husband and I sat and listened, enthralled, at some points laughing so hard we almost fell out of chairs.
Lou (the husband) suggests that I play a few minutes from the cd at the book launch on February second. After I read the poem, "Trout," I'll let the soprano's voice take over. The hall will be filled with laughter and flight, in one woman's voice. Imagine, my funky little words soaring to the heights!
David's music is published by Boosey & Hawkes, and as soon as this CD goes up for sale, I'll give everyone the info. Perhaps you'll remember that my department chair was too modest to include "My Favorite Penis Poems" in the English Department newsletter. He said something like, "Marilyn's poetry included in concert with works of Rumi. For more info, ask her." I do hope he comes to the book launch! :) Marilyn
