If my favorite girlhood detective was Nancy Drew, my faves today would involve a split vote. I love James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux for saltiness and his suffering, his balance of strength and compassion. And he likes to eat in the Quarter. He breaks the rules, of course. He's friends with a fat loser (who do I identify with?) Friendship trumps common sense.
And I like Jack Reacher in the Lee Child series. He's more of an instinctive hero than Dave R. His military training keeps him alive, and he keeps reinventing himself as need be. He travels lighter than any of the others. And he seems always to have good sex, no matter what his age or the stress of being attacked and outnumbered.
What I really love in these books is the language. Burke's is rich and overgrown, like kudzu and marsh in the Bayoux. Burke's is spare and lean and all action.
My favorite detectives are men made of words.
