So there I was in Oakland ready to give a poetry performance--but who did I know in Oakland? Who would show up? Well, my freshman English advisor and Tufts professor Martin Friedman, his wife, daughters and grandchildren showed up, and Joyce Jenkins and crew showed up from Poetry Flash. And Susan Cohen's family and friends--and and and Huntington Sharp of Red Room fame turned up looking like a movie star--and Jennifer Gibbons, also a Roomie! How adorable and supportive to take time out of a Sunday to be my cheerleaders! Praise them and Red Room for creating a writers' network that really holds up. And former Poet Laureate Robert Hass sat in the front row, and so did Brenda Hillman.
The grandchildren of Martin Friedman, Annibel and Arlo, made a poster with POETRY and smiling faces--we used electrical tape to post it on the podium.
It was all good, and I savor the writer-ly connections, and the longstanding friendships. Rock on, Red Room and praise to Huntington, Jennifer, Ivory, Belle, Ryoma... may your writings flourish, and bless you back--
