Last summer, for reasons that are very precious & private to me, I remember that the fireflies arrived on June 9th. Partly, I remember this because June 9th is the birthday of 3 people I'm crazy about, one of whom has already passed on. (The other two are Peitor Angell and Johnny Depp...)
Well, here it is, June 9th, bright & early in the morning and I was out front watering the little flower pots and what to my wondering eyes should appear? A sleeping firefly! It was sleeping on my front door. It wasn't blinking on and off, but it still counts as seeing my first firefly of the summer yet again on June 9th!!
And what does it mean, symbolically, that it was sleeping on my front door??? You know, biblically, marking someone's door was a way for an angry & wrathful God to know to pass over you when He was visiting horrific plagues upon unsuspecting others. But sleeping fireflies, I'm thinking, have a little less to do with anger & wrath and perhaps more to do with marking my house for a summer full of delight & joy! Yay!
I really love fireflies, gang. For 26 years of my adult life, I never saw them. It doesn't mean that fireflies don't live in New York City somewhere (perhaps out in the boroughs??) just that they were never hanging around Times Square, the East Village, or the Upper West Side. (The 3 neighborhoods I lived in.) Fireflies remind me of the great childhood I had in Cleveland. They also serve to remind me that physical reality is breathtaking and astounding. (Which also brings me back to this time last summer, and when it comes to being "metaphysical" -- as well as cryptic -- I want to say thank you, bambino, for the most astounding metaphysical ride of a lifetime!)
So, it looks like summer is off to quite an auspicious start! I bought some new wind chimes yesterday and a new pair of yellow & white flipflops that, conveniently enough, have pictures of cocktails all over them! Yay! The guys are coming TOMORROW to install my new bathroom floor!! And Bill Brent will be here in just a handful of weeks. Wow. I don't know about you, but life feels so fucking precious to me right this minute.
Okay, have a great Thursday, gang, wherever you are!! And watch out for miracles!! There's one around every corner. See ya, and thanks for visiting!!
