The Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi identified a fundamental confusion when he related a dream in which he was a butterfly. On awakening, he wondered if he was Zhuangzi who had dreamt he was a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming he was Zhuangzi. Margaret Mascarenhas embraces this confusion and makes it beautiful in her remarkable second novel .
