Born in the Bronx. Moved about every six years to various parts of New York State. Lived in: Queens, Long Island, Woodstock, NYC. Moved to San Francisco in my 40s, somehow migrated to Oakland where I am now "Stuck inside of Oakland with the New York blues again." "Writing is the only road out." -- Anne Tyler said that. "No visible means of escape." -- I said that. "Life is hard, and then you write a book about it."--My brilliant son said that.
Married, teenage mother; single mother within six years. Two kids, a girl and boy; boy born with hydrocephalus, a chronic medical condition and one of the defining experiences of my life. He's now 44, lives more or less independently nearby. Daughter has two sons, so I'm Grandma Marcy.
Other defining experiences: women's movement, hippie movement, music of the 60s--70s, yoga, Eastern religious ideas, friends and lovers too numerous to name, various substances, women's erotica, sex-positive people, deaths of father, mother, lover, friends.
Never wrote a bio like this before. Most of me is in my writing.
